What is the Kern Project?

The Kern Project rescues dogs from the shelters and from the community, often pulling them from a field, park, or wherever they have been intentionally dumped. We provide the vet care, boarding and transportation to the Bay Area and beyond, where these unwanted dogs and cats are adopted into homes where they are loved as family members. We also assist the community with free spay/neuter on an individual basis or through sponsorship of community clinics.

The Kern Project is on a mission to save homeless dogs and cats of Kern County, CA through rescue, rehabilitation, rehoming and the promotion of spay/neuter.

COVID sent animal welfare into the crisis we see today. With shelter operations severely diminished, strays were not picked up by Animal Control in many areas, shelter intakes (owner surrenders or finders of strays) limited, and adoptions curtailed. As such, many unfixed dogs were dumped and abandoned, adding to an already significant unwanted and stray pet population. Compounding this, spay / neuters / vet access were not offered during this time, with few exceptions.

TODAY, there is an explosion of dogs and puppies everywhere. The shelters are full and, as such, dogs are not picked up, shelter intakes (owner surrenders or finders of dogs) are limited, rejected, or discouraged because there is NO ROOM. There is not enough free or low cost spay / neuter. And so, the cycle continues.
