We are located in Marin County, CA, just north of San Francisco. We primarily rescue and transport animals from Kern County, CA. We do not adopt out of state or out of the immediate San Francisco Bay Area. We will consider local SF Bay Area adopters only. If you're located in Kern County, we encourage you to go to your local shelters to adopt an animal. The shelters are overflowing with animals in need of good, qualified adopters who can provide loving forever homes.

There is a severe animal overpopulation problem in Kern County, CA and thousands of animals land in the shelter, or are abandoned on the streets in Kern County every year. Many of the animals who end up in the shelter are euthanized. We know there are incredibly hard-working and life-saving rescuers on the ground in Kern County trying to help as many animals as they can, but it is daunting work and we are doing our part to support those life-saving efforts by transferring some of the Kern County homeless animals to the SF Bay Area.

We are a small rescue group and transport animals every 2 weeks. Some of the animals we transport get transferred to our rescue partners. Some of the animals we rescue we will adopt out ourselves. Any animals that are available for adoption through us are posted on our Facebook and Instagram pages. If an animal is available for adoption, the post will say "Available" at the top. If any animal is adopted, the post will say "Adopted."

We do not rescue any specific breed and we do not know or guarantee any dog or cat we rescue is a certain breed. Our favorite "breed" is the "rescue” and we encourage people to search for their next pet based on the compatibility of the animal with the adopter's home and lifestyle, not their "breed."

Please fill out the adoption application on our website and submit it. If you're applying for a specific dog, please indicate what dog that is. If you're submitting a general interest application, please make sure to describe the kind of dog you're looking for. We will review all applications and reach out if we have animals who we think are a good fit. Please note that we are a small, all-volunteer organization and may not be able to respond to every applicant. Please do not be discouraged! If we don't have the right animal for you, we are certain another rescue out there will. We often tell folks to also look at the Milo Foundation, Compassion Without Borders and Muttville.

We rely on a small network of trusted foster families. If you're interested in fostering and are located in the SF Bay Area, please email us at info@thekernproject.org and tell us more about yourself, your family, your home, your experience with animals and any pets you currently have.

We don't have a structured volunteer program, but if you're interested in helping, send us an email at info@thekernproject.org to tell us more about ways you might be able to help!

100% of your donation goes to saving animals. We are a rescue organization run by a small, but mighty team of volunteers. We started this rescue group and do this work because we are passionate about helping animals in need and see a massive need in Kern County. All of the funds we raise go to pay for routine veterinary care including spay/neuter, emergency care, boarding, transport and general care of the animals we save.
